City of Kingston

The City of Kingston is seeking a full-time Plumbing Inspector to work in the Building, Safety and Zoning Department. 

 

A plumbing inspector is responsible for the inspection of all plumbing, ventilation and drainage installations and alterations to ascertain compliance with municipal plumbing code.  The Plumbing Inspector works under the Director of Building Safety and Zoning enforcement.  Does related work as required.

 

The qualified candidate will have thorough knowledge of NYS plumbing codes and related laws and regulations; thorough knowledge of the standard practices, processes, tools, equipment and materials of the plumbing trade; Thorough knowledge of plumbing inspection techniques and practices; Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work; Good knowledge of basic investigative procedures and methods; Ability to read and interpret plumbing plans and specifications; Ability to observe critically, plumbing installations or alterations, obtain accurate data and prepare reports; Ability to operate a motor vehicle; Ability to work independently; Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other public officials and the general public; Firmness; Tact; Good judgment; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the appointment date:

 

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent AND Seven (7) years of experience in the plumbing trade, including four (4) years equivalent to a journey-level plumber.

 

Special Requirements: 

1)      To be a certified code enforcement official, an individual must successfully complete the required basic training (a minimum of 120 hours of basic training) and maintain the required yearly in-service training (24 hours annually) and any required advanced in-service.  A person has 18 months from the first training class to complete the basic training program.  If an individual is appointed as either a BSI or CEO for a municipality, they have 18 months from their appointment date to complete the basic training program. If an individual has already started the basic training, it is the shorter of the two time frames. Failure to complete the basic training program within the time frame will result in forfeiture of the training courses completed. Per MSD IM-08-18 and 19NYCRR Part 1208.

2)      Must have a valid New York State Driver License at the time of appointment and maintained throughout employment with the City of Kingston.
